"I was at the Dominion Theatre in 1988 when this recording was made. The whole night was electric. This wonderful fresh raw talent of rage, love, tenderness, regret, passion. It was all going on. A quite extraordinary performance from a fierce, brave yet vulnerable and tormented young woman. Such incredible bravery to be on that stage and share and bare her soul. Cropped hair, big big Doc Marten boots and a black and white mini skirt. I think polka dots or a ska type square patten. Rebellious, angry... stomping around stage. Spitting. She was so fucking punk, but she wasnt she was uniquely her. Such an extraordinary voice, lyrics of a true poet. To this day....never has a concert made such an impression on me. And this... Mandinka... Im virtually lost for words. All of us in the theatre that night knew we were witnessing the emergence of an extraordinary talent. She was a warrior, she was a priestess. Complicated, troubled with multiple child hood traumas. Neuro diverse... and a woman who wore her heart on her sleeve and spoke her truth and had strong opinions on many things.... Most of them of valid and with good cause and reason. Of course an artist like this was always going to have a target on her back from those in the Establishment who tremble at the bucking and fucking of the status quo. The press were going to try and break her and hounded her for 35 years. Thats what they have always done to strong assertive women artists Ive always adored her, her strength and her passion and most importantly bravery. For me, she defined an era. May she now rest in peace."
Thank you markodakin for this lovely words.
